I know you were wondering how long it would
take me to get to the Star Trek movies! This was a defining moment in the
history of Star Trek. If this movie had been as
awful as the original Star Trek movie, I believe the franchise would have died
in its tracks. Instead, this is not just a good movie, it's a great movie!
The story is
so well written and compelling. The characters are richly written and
developed. The usual crowd, Shatner, Nimoy, etc. do a stellar job of giving
life to the same old characters. And then there is
Khan...Ricardo Montalban plays one of the greatest villains in movie history as
the nearly indestructible Khan. I believe Khan is the prototype that all movie
villain stereotypes have been based on.
But there can only be one Khan.
There are so many things about this movie that
are memorable -- but the greatest seems to be the closing action sequence where
Khan's ship
chases the Enterprise through a nebula. The use of music is fantastic, really
building the suspense. And who can forget the death of Spock, another defining
moment in Star Trek history. Even the usual
over-acting from the cast somehow adds to the mystique of The Wrath of Khan.
This is one of those flicks I have seen many many times...and I'm sure there are
many more viewings in my future.
