This movie has all the elements of a 1940's
thriller -- devious scheming, surprisingly nasty characters and a little bit of
the ridiculous. Without pyrotechnics and violence,
older movies relied on story and character. A lot of the time, the characters
were thin and the stories too melodramatic (or soap-like), but sometimes they
were fascinating. Gaslight is a great example
of one of those movies that successfully mixes great acting with devious
characters. Sure it's a little melodramatic at times, but it's still a great
thriller.
The performance
that makes this movie is a young Angela Landsbury as the maid with an evil
streak. If you've never seen this 1944 version of Gaslight, check your rental
store or buy it from the link above. You won't
regret it!
