When I first saw this movie I'd heard so much
about it, I expected to be blown away -- and I wasn't. I found it cheesy and a
little bit sappy. Turns out -- that's actually
its appeal!
After I watched it again, I realized, it's not a
"blow you away" kind of movie. It's much quieter than that, more about
relationships than intrigue. And
mostly it's about a tough-guy (Bogart) who is so helplessly in love with this
woman (Bergman) that he would give up everything for her to be happy. There is
something touching and melodramatic about
it that makes this one worth watching over and over.
