This is quite simply one of the greatest
movies ever made -- and it's Bette Davis at her absolute finest. She is
bitingly sarcastic, yet vulnerable -- the way you might
imagine her to be in reality. She absolutely chews up the screen in this behind
the scenes look at an aging Broadway star.
Anne Baxter as the deceivingly sinister
up-and-comer
is also superb. Although the only acting Oscar went to George Sanders, the
movie did take home the prize for Best Picture and Best Director. And yes,
Marilyn Monroe does make a brief appearance as a
ditsy blond.
Even before I saw this movie, I was a huge Bette
Davis fan, and this flick was sort of the icing on the cake. Not only does she
utter one of her most memorable
lines ("Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy night"), but she
absolutely dominates the screen. A truly fantastic piece of film making.
