This movie pops up on a lot of people's "best
of all time" list. It's not because of the story -- which is pretty simple, but
because of the performances. Katharine
Hepburn plays a repressed spinster and Bogart plays a gin-swilling, vulgar river
boat captain. The contrast of those two characters and the beautiful
performances by the actors make this movie
memorable.
The
two characters are drawn together by circumstance, but through the perils of the
story, they end up committed to each other. It's a gritty love story
beautifully shot by the late John Huston. A true
classic.
